Apartment access in the Oostelijk Havengebied covers the street door, bike store, lift lobby and front door of the blocks on Java-eiland, KNSM-eiland, Borneo and Sporenburg, usually served by a single matched key.
The blocks built here in the nineties and after were designed around one idea: residents carry one key. It works beautifully until something in the chain changes. Then you discover how many doors that one key was quietly opening.
The four doors nobody counts
Street entrance, bike storage, refuse room and your own front door, sometimes with a fifth for the storage cage in the basement. When a resident loses a key here, it is not one door that is exposed. It is every shared space in the building.
That is why the sensible response to a lost key in these blocks is a conversation with the VvE rather than a quiet cylinder change on your own door. Changing yours restores your privacy and leaves the bike store open to whoever found the keyring.
Rekeying a whole entrance
Rekeying an entrance sounds dramatic and usually is not. The shared cylinders are replaced with a new matched set, every resident receives new keys, and the old keys stop working the same afternoon. We quote per entrance so a board can take a single decision, and we hand over a register of which key went to which flat.
Where a building has moved to electronic tags, a lost tag can simply be deleted from the system. Mixed buildings, half mechanical and half electronic, are the ones that catch people out, because deleting the tag does nothing about the mechanical key on the same ring. Storage cages in the basements here are worth a look as well. They are usually secured with a padlock chosen by whoever moved in first, hanging on a hasp fitted by the developer, and the hasp is almost always the weaker of the two. Bikes, sports gear and seasonal items live in these cages, and a basement door propped open during a move is all the opportunity anyone needs. A closed shackle padlock on a hardened hasp settles it.
Doors on the water side
Salt air is hard on hardware. Cylinders on balconies and terraces facing the IJ corrode faster than anything inside, and a corroded cylinder eventually seizes with your key half turned. Stainless or coated hardware is worth the difference here, and a yearly clean costs nothing.
Bridges, courtyards and finding the door
Addresses on Java-eiland and Borneo are not always where a navigation app thinks they are. Entrances open onto internal courtyards, several blocks share one street number, and a few can only be reached from the far side of a bridge. When you call, tell us the block name or the nearest bridge as well as the house number. It sounds trivial and it is regularly the difference between arriving in twenty minutes and circling a canal for another ten.
