Window lock repair means restoring or replacing the handle, espagnolette, catch or key lock on a window so that it closes tightly and cannot be opened from outside; a locksmith does this on site for wooden, aluminium and plastic frames.
Front doors get all the attention, yet in many Amsterdam homes the easiest way in is a window: the kitchen window at the back, the bathroom window above the extension or the sash window that has not locked properly for years. Window lock repair in Amsterdam is a small job that closes a large gap. Below you read which windows matter, what can be repaired and when a new lock is better.
Which windows a burglar looks at
- Ground floor windows at the back and side of the house, out of sight of the street.
- Windows on a flat roof, an extension or a balcony that can be reached by climbing.
- Tilt and turn windows left in the tilt position. From outside they look closed; from a ladder they are open.
- Old sash windows in the centre of Amsterdam with a single catch that can be slid open with a knife.
A window on the third floor facing the street is not a priority. A window on the first floor above a shed roof is.
What can be repaired
Most window problems are mechanical. A handle that turns without engaging usually has a worn gear or a broken connection to the espagnolette, the rod that runs along the edge of the frame. That gear can often be replaced without touching the rest of the window.
A catch that no longer bites is realigned or replaced. A lockable handle that has lost its key is replaced with a new handle, which is quicker than copying an unmarked key. Our lock repair service covers all of these on wooden, aluminium and plastic frames.
When repair is not enough
If the frame has warped, the window may close but not lock because the bolts no longer reach the keepers. If the hardware is decades old and no parts exist, a new espagnolette with new keepers is the sensible route. If the window has never had a lock, common on older Amsterdam houses, we fit a lockable handle or a separate window lock. The lock security page explains the options.
Lockable handles and the fire question
A lockable window handle stops a burglar from opening a window even after breaking a small pane to reach it. The flip side is that you need the key in an emergency. Keep it near the window, out of sight from outside and never in the lock itself. Bedrooms that serve as an escape route are better off with a handle that opens from inside without a key.

Frequently asked questions
Can a window lock be repaired or does it need replacing?
A worn gear, a loose handle or a misaligned catch can usually be repaired. A warped frame or hardware with no spare parts means replacement.
Which windows in Amsterdam need a lock most?
Windows at the back and side on the ground floor, windows above a flat roof or extension, and old sash windows with a single catch.
Is a tilt window safe to leave open?
No. A tilted window can be opened from outside with simple tools. Close and lock it when you leave or go to sleep.
What is an espagnolette?
The rod inside the window frame that moves the bolts when you turn the handle. When it wears, the handle turns but the window no longer locks.
Do you repair window locks in the evening?
Yes. Locksmith Amsterdam works 24 hours a day, so a window that will not close is handled the same day, with the price confirmed before we start.
