Can you change the lock in a rental apartment in Amsterdam?
You can change the lock in a rental apartment in most cases, provided you arrange it with the landlord: the cylinder is replaced, the landlord receives a key to the new cylinder and the original cylinder is kept so it can be refitted when you leave.
The key you were handed with your Amsterdam rental looks like it has been copied a few times. Or a housemate left on bad terms and still has one. Are you allowed to change the lock in a rental apartment at all? The practical answer is yes, with the landlord involved.
Who owns the lock
The door, the lock and the cylinder are part of the property, so they belong to the landlord. The landlord wants to be able to enter in an emergency and to get the property back in its original state. Both are solved by two steps: give the landlord a key to the new cylinder, and keep the old cylinder so it can go back in when you move out.
What to arrange before you call
- Tell the landlord or the property manager what you want to change and why. A short message is enough; keep it as a record.
- Agree who pays. If you change the lock for your own reasons, expect to pay for it yourself.
- Check whether the building has a master key system. If so, a plain replacement cylinder may not fit the plan; the property manager will know.
What the locksmith actually does
In nearly every Amsterdam rental, changing the lock means changing the cylinder. The lock case, the handles and the fittings stay in the door. Our technician slides the old cylinder out, fits the new one in the same size and hands you the new keys. The old cylinder goes in a drawer for the day you leave. The visit leaves no trace on the door. Our lock replacement service covers this.
When the key is lost rather than shared
If you have lost the only key, the door is opened first and the cylinder replaced in the same visit. The steps for that situation are in our blog about losing the only key to a rental flat.
A safer cylinder while you are at it
If the cylinder that came with the flat sticks out of the fitting or has no anti snap protection, replacing it is the moment to go one level up. A better cylinder in the same size protects you for the whole tenancy and can stay in the door afterwards. Mention it when you ask for permission.
What you get from us

Frequently asked questions
Am I allowed to change the lock in my rental apartment?
In most cases yes, provided you arrange it with the landlord, give them a key to the new cylinder and keep the old cylinder for when you leave.
Does the landlord have to pay for it?
If you change the lock for your own reasons, expect to pay yourself. Agree this with the landlord before you book.
Do I have to give my landlord a key?
