Deadbolt or Nachtslot: How Dutch Front Doors Lock

Deadbolt or nachtslot: how Dutch front doors lock and why it matters when you’re locked out

A deadbolt lock, in Dutch the nachtslot or nachtschoot, is the solid bolt that only moves when you turn the key; it is separate from the spring latch, the dagschoot, that clicks shut when you pull the door closed.

You pull the door shut and it clicks. Is it locked? In the Dutch sense, no. The click is the latch. The lock is the bolt you throw with the key, and whether you did that before you walked away is the most important fact when you stand outside without a key.

Latch and bolt: dagschoot and nachtschoot

Open your door and look at the edge. You see a small angled tongue that springs in and out: the latch, in Dutch the dagschoot. It holds the door closed and opens with the handle or the key. Above or below it sits a square bolt that only moves with the key: the deadbolt lock, in Dutch the nachtschoot. Turn the key and the bolt goes deep into the frame.

Why it matters when you’re locked out

A door that is only on the latch is a quick job. The latch is spring loaded, and a locksmith can push it back without touching the cylinder. A door on the deadbolt lock is a different job. The bolt does not spring; it has to be turned back through the cylinder, or the cylinder has to be opened or replaced. Our blog on damage free door opening in Amsterdam Centrum describes both situations.

What we ask on the phone

When you call our emergency locksmith line, the first question after your address is: did you lock the door with the key, or did it just close? If the door closed behind you as you left, it is almost certainly on the latch only. If you locked up before a night out, it is on the bolt. Your answer tells us which tools to bring and lets us give you a realistic price.

Multipoint locks: more bolts, same logic

Newer doors often have a multipoint lock: lift the handle and hooks engage at several heights, then the key locks them in place. If the key was turned, the door is fully bolted; if it was only pulled shut, it is on the latch. The same question applies.

Should you always use the deadbolt?

Yes, when you leave and at night. A door on the latch alone can be opened with a thin plastic card in seconds, and a locksmith is not the only one who knows that. If your bolt no longer throws smoothly, our lock replacement service fits a new lock case or cylinder.

Frequently asked questions

What is the nachtslot?

The deadbolt: the solid bolt that only moves when you turn the key. The dagschoot is the spring latch that clicks shut when the door closes.

Is my door locked if it just clicked shut?

Only on the latch. It is not bolted until you turn the key. A latch alone can be opened with simple tools.

Does it matter for the locksmith whether the door is bolted?

Yes. A latched door is opened quickly without damage. A bolted door takes more time and sometimes a new cylinder, and that changes the price we give you.

What if I do not know whether I locked it?

Tell us that. The technician checks on site and confirms the price before starting.

Should I always lock the deadbolt?

Yes, whenever you leave and at night. It is the simplest and most effective security habit for a Dutch front door.
