Replacing a door lock means removing the existing cylinder or lock case, fitting a new one that matches the door and the fittings, and testing it with new keys; a locksmith does this on site in a single visit.
You have decided the lock has to go: keys have gone missing, a tenant has moved out, the mechanism is worn or you simply want something safer. The next question is what actually happens.
Searching for how to replace a door lock brings up videos for a different kind of door in a different country. This is how it works on a Dutch door in Amsterdam, from the phone call to the moment you turn the new key.
Step 1: the call
You describe the door: front door or inside door, what kind of lock, whether there is a knob inside and why you want it replaced. Based on that we tell you what the job involves and what it costs. If you can send a photo of the lock and the edge of the door, even better. You get one price for the whole job, including the visit.
Step 2: the visit
Our technician arrives, looks at the door and confirms the price before touching anything. In Amsterdam we aim to be with you within 30 minutes for urgent jobs; a planned replacement is scheduled at a time that suits you.
Expect to show ID or something with your name and the address, because we only replace locks for people who can show they live or work there.
Step 3: removing the old lock
For a cylinder replacement the fixing screw comes out of the edge of the door and the old cylinder slides out. For a complete lock case the handles and fittings come off first, then the case is drawn out of the door edge.
On older Amsterdam doors this is where surprises show up: an odd size, a case painted over many times or a frame that has moved. That is why we measure on site rather than ordering blind.
Step 4: fitting the new lock
The new cylinder or case goes in, is fixed and lined up with the strike plate in the frame. If you have chosen a certified cylinder or a security plate, this is the moment we fit those as a set, so the cylinder finishes flush and cannot be gripped from outside. The lock security page explains those upgrades.
Step 5: testing and keys
We test the lock with the door open and closed, from both sides, with every key. You receive the new keys and an invoice with the work described, which you can pass on to your landlord or insurer if needed.
How long does it take?
A straightforward cylinder replacement is a short job. A complete lock case on an old door takes longer, especially if the strike plate needs moving. Either way it is done in one visit. Everything we replace is listed on the lock replacement service page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace a door lock myself?
A cylinder swap is possible if you measure correctly and the door is in good condition. A lock case, a multipoint lock or an old Amsterdam door is better left to a locksmith.
Do I need to replace the whole lock or just the cylinder?
If the mechanism works and you only need new keys or a safer cylinder, the cylinder alone is enough. If the handle or bolt is worn, the lock case is replaced.
How long does a lock replacement take?
A cylinder replacement is a short job; a complete lock case takes longer. Both are done in one visit.
Do you bring the new lock with you?
Yes. Describe the door on the phone and our technician brings a matching cylinder or lock case.
Can you replace a lock in the evening or at the weekend?
Yes. Locksmith Amsterdam works 24 hours a day, every day, and an evening or weekend replacement is booked the same way.
