Keys locked inside a flat in Amsterdam usually means a self-closing front door has latched behind you while the keys stayed on the other side, which is one of the quickest jobs a locksmith does.

Most Amsterdam front doors close themselves. You step out to take the bins down, to sign for a parcel, to answer the intercom, and the door does exactly what it was built to do. Nine times out of ten the door is only on the latch, and that is good news.

Latched or locked, and why it matters

A latched door is held by the sprung tongue alone. It can normally be opened in under a minute with a thin tool along the frame, with no damage and no replacement parts.

A locked door is held by a bolt that was turned with a key, which cannot happen accidentally from the outside. If the door blew shut, it is almost certainly latched. Tell us which it is when you call, because it changes both the time and the price.

What to try before calling

Check whether a housemate or partner is reachable, and whether a neighbour holds a spare. Look at whether a window was left open, but do not climb: a fall from an Amsterdam stairwell or balcony costs far more than a locksmith. If you are in a block with a caretaker, they sometimes hold a master key for the entrance but almost never for individual flats.

Stopping it happening again

The cheapest fix is behavioural: keys in your hand before the door closes, every single time. The practical fix is a spare with someone nearby, or a certified key safe on your own wall. A number of self-closing doors can also be set so the latch is held back during the day, which suits anyone who is in and out constantly.

Older Amsterdam doors and the double turn

A number of doors in this city, particularly in older buildings, only latch when the handle is lifted and the key turned. On those doors a slam does nothing at all and you cannot lock yourself out by accident. On modern self-closing doors the opposite is true. Knowing which type you have is worth thirty seconds of your attention, because it also tells you whether the door is genuinely locked when you leave the house, which a surprising number of people get wrong in the other direction.

What it costs and why we say it upfront

You hear the price on the phone before we set off, and it does not change unless the situation does. If we arrive and the door turns out to be locked rather than latched, or there is a second lock nobody mentioned, you get the new figure before any tool comes out. That is the entire pricing policy, and it exists because lockout calls are exactly the moment when people are least able to argue about an invoice.
