Master Key System for Amsterdam Buildings and Offices

Master key systems for Amsterdam apartment buildings and offices

A master key system is a set of cylinders planned so that each key opens a defined group of doors: a resident’s key opens their own door and the shared entrance, a cleaner’s key opens the common areas, and the manager’s master key opens every door in the building.

Six flats, one street door, a bike cellar and a meter cupboard. Every resident carries a bunch of keys, the manager carries a bigger one, and nobody is sure who still has a key to the bike cellar. A master key system replaces that pile with a plan: one key per person that opens exactly the doors they should open, and nothing else.

How a master key system works

Every cylinder in the building is cut to a plan. The cylinder of flat 3 accepts two keys: the key of the resident of flat 3 and the master key. The street door accepts every resident’s key, the cleaner’s key and the master key. Each person carries one key, and the manager carries one key that opens everything. Because the plan is documented, a cylinder can be added later without starting over.

Where it pays off

  • Apartment buildings with a shared entrance, storage and technical rooms, managed by a VvE or a property manager.
  • Offices where staff need the front door and their own floor, but not the server room or the director’s office.
  • Buildings with cleaners, contractors and caretakers who need the common areas, without a key to any home.

Registered keys: the part that makes it work

A master key system is only as good as the control over copies. That is why these systems use registered keys; extra keys are cut against the plan, with the manager’s permission. When someone leaves, their key is recorded as returned or missing, and a single cylinder can be swapped without disturbing the rest. For a VvE that regularly deals with losing the key to a shared street door, this is the structural fix.

What to decide before you order

List the doors and the people, and mark who needs which door. Decide who holds the master key and how many keys each flat receives. Then choose the security level: the cylinders on every door that faces the street or a public hallway should have anti snap protection. The lock security page explains those levels.

What we do

Ask when you call how extra keys and replacement cylinders are arranged afterwards. The full range is on our our locksmith services page.

Frequently asked questions

What is a master key system?

A set of cylinders cut to a plan, so each key opens a defined group of doors and one master key opens them all.

Is it suitable for a small VvE?

Yes. Even a building with four flats, a street door and a bike cellar benefits from one key per resident and one master key for the manager.

Can residents copy their keys?

Not freely. The keys are registered and protected, so extra keys are cut against the plan with permission from the manager.

What happens when a resident leaves?

Their key is recorded as returned or missing. If it is missing, the cylinder of that flat is swapped within the plan; the other doors stay as they are.

Does Locksmith Amsterdam design master key systems?

Yes. Call +31 (0)20 210 1986, describe the building and we draw up the plan, fit the cylinders and hand over the keys as agreed, with the price confirmed before we start.
